From Java applets to modern web apps

Back when we were computer science students, Java applets were the cutting edge of web application technology and the dorms had only just recently been wired with ethernet. We were proud of the “high-tech” Java games we were able to create, with many of our games featuring AI computer players — back when AI meant algorithms — and in 1999 we launched the JGames website to feature our creations.

The site attained a fair degree of popularity. Back then we were showing banner advertisements and providing email-based support to players with questions or problems through this contact-us page.

Between around 2015 and 2022, web browsers began to phase out support for Java applets, with Internet Explorer being the last man standing. In March of 2026 the java.applet package was completely removed from the programming language, officially marking the final end of the applet era. Our Java applets had become relics of the past.

But while this was happening, new AI programming tools were on the rise, making it more possible than ever to port old code into new formats. Using these tools, JGames was reborn with modern webapp ports of our old Java applet code.
